How to start your career in Salesforce?

Salesforce being a booming technology nowadays. New customers are signing contracts every single day, and that means that more and more Salesforce Administrators, Developers and Consultants are needed, so I get a lot of questions asking how to start a career in Salesforce?

The first question is - What role are you targeting or willing to do when it comes to Salesforce?

Do you want to be a Salesforce Admin? Or a Salesforce Developer??

Let's first start with seeing how these roles are different...

1. Salesforce Administrator

Salesforce administrator duties regularly incorporate comprehending client issues, making minor updates, and actualizing significant upgrades through point-and-click design.

2. Salesforce Developers

Many Salesforce solicitations can be settled through point-and-click design, yet coding is required for progressively complex functionalities. That is the place where Salesforce engineers come in: Designing and executing complex arrangements. Developers are required to customize pages, mixes, or repeat wide framework activities.

Having known what the difference is, based on your inclination, you can decide which path to choose.

The great thing about Salesforce is when you start out you don’t need to know any programming languages. When you create business applications in Salesforce, a lot of it is “click development” or “click configuration” to create applications. Not to say this is “easy”, but it’s all learnable!

From a beginner to an Admin/developer?

Taking those baby steps.....

1.   Create a Trailhead account!

Anyone starting studying Salesforce should first create a TRAILHEAD Account. This provides you access to all of the features and functionality of Salesforce, which allows you to explore and play with the newest features and get hands-on experience with the application.

Simply go to https://trailhead.salesforce.com/ and signup for your new account and start exploring the different modules of Salesforce.

In Trailheads, you can choose which modules you want to learn as per your desired role. For e.g., if you are aspiring for Salesforce Administrator, you can select your role as "Admin" and level as "Beginner"

Admin orgs are 100% free forever and will remain active as long as you log in once every six months.

 2.  Join Community Groups

Networking is one of the single best things as you get to meet different people and discuss their journey, how they started, what role are they in, etc.

You can join a community group in your area by simply registering on Trailblazer Community and join the desired group. Simple as that!

Another best thing that you can leverage is - Salesforce Events in your area.

If you want to check which are the salesforce events in your area, simply go to Events, add your location and you will get to know when and where the next event is.

To check for an event nearby https://success.salesforce.com/events

 3.   Use Social Media!

Social media is a great way to build your network and engage with others in the community. Salesforce users tend to prefer Twitter, but you’ll find Salesforce users sharing information on nearly every social network.
You can join different groups related to Salesforce on Facebook too!

Try out the group - Salesforce Techies to stay tuned to all the latest updates by Salesforce and help you in learning Salesforce.

You can also check out Salesforce Tutorial learning series to jump-start your learning  :)

 4Get your Hands Dirty...

After all, it is important to try things on your own!

With trailheads, you will certainly have a grip on the concepts by completing the challenges in them but try creating some apps in the developer org to test your knowledge. Salesforce provides free “Salesforce Developer Orgs” which is a fully functioning Salesforce tool but limited to a couple of user licenses and limited space.

 5. Get Certified!

Last but not least, what is better than examining your knowledge and getting certified!

Salesforce has different certifications based on the roles. The base of all certifications is - Salesforce Certified Administrator - ADM201.  The reason for this is it gives you a good overview of the whole of the core Salesforce platform.

You can start your certification journey learning from the series of tutorials designed to help you understand what to study and how.

This course gives you focused training on the Salesforce platform with test questions for the exam.

Hopefully, this blog will help you in getting clarity on how can you start your career in Salesforce.

All the best!
